Ninety three of the 104 gyms and leisure centres within ten kilometres of the market are independent. Eleven are chain sites, and those eleven belong to seven different operators: three PureGyms, three Gym Groups, and one each of Nuffield Health, David Lloyd, Bannatyne, NRG and You Fit. For a city of this size that is an unusually thin chain presence and an unusually deep independent one.

The independents cluster where the rent is cheap and the ceilings are high. Vulcan Road, Delta Close and Whiffler Road in the north carry a dozen between them. Roundtree Close in Thorpe St Andrew holds three in one cul de sac. Guardian Road on the western edge has two side by side. Norwich has quietly turned its light industrial estates into a fitness district, and almost nobody writing about gyms in Norwich has noticed.

Beyond the gyms there are 120 studios and clubs, 25 of them yoga, 19 pilates, nine boxing, and 49 martial arts schools of one code or another, plus 109 personal trainers working within twelve kilometres of the castle.

Norwich prices sort into four bands, and once you see them you cannot unsee them.

• Budget chains, £16.99 to £23.99 a month. PureGym Castle Mall and Riverside start at £16.99 plus a joining fee, PureGym Aylsham Road is £19.99, The Gym Group Norwich City is £17.99 off peak or £23.99 standard, both plus £10.
• Council, £19.99 a month or £4.90 a visit. The Norman Centre on Bignold Road runs the Xtra Mile gym at 40 plus stations, and pay as you go drops to £3.60 with a Go4Less card.
• The strongest independent, £29.99 to £34.99. Phoenix Gym on St Marys Works charges £29.99 standard and £34.99 premium, with a £7.99 day pass.
• Premium, unpublished. David Lloyd, Bannatyne, Nuffield Health, NRG and You Fit print no price at all. You have to ring and be sold to.

Norwich is a walkable core wrapped in suburbs that each behave differently. NR1, NR2 and NR3 put a gym within ten minutes of the market. NR6 in the north has more venues than any other district. NR4 belongs to the university, the hospital and the Research Park, and trains on shift patterns nowhere else keeps.
